About Us

SB Music is a New Zealand owned and operated business, originally established in the UK over 35 years ago by Steven Booth, however after returning from a long holiday to New Zealand at the end of 2005, Steven and his partner Tracey had fallen in love with New Zealand and developed a burning desire to return. It didn't take them long and in 2006 they were back!

Shortly after arriving in New Zealand Steven was approached to take up the baton as Professional Conductor of Waitakere Auckland Brass Band where he was the man in the middle for 8 years. Eventually work commitments forced him to step down from this role but he is still with the band today as their Solo Baritone.

In 2015 Steven was appointed Musical Director of The Band of The Royal Regiment of New Zealand ArtilleryNew Zealand's oldest band with an unbroken playing history since 1864. Since then the band has gone from strength to strength, with increasing players numbers and engagements, and even several foreign tours.

Steven is also available as a freelance conductor, please see our contact page for ways to get in touch.

Steven was born in Manchester in the heart of the brass band community in the North West of England. He started playing cornet at the age of eleven, later moving to euphonium and settling on baritone in 1986. A student at the world renowned University of Salford in Manchester, Steven graduated from his BA in Music with distinction. He has studied with the Childs brothers, Roy Newsome, David King and Goff Richards and had the pleasure of playing under conductors such as Richard Evans, David King, Roy Newsome, James Watson and Garry Cutt to name but a few.

He has been a member of various bands, including principle baritone of the world famous Black Dyke Mills, Leyland (formerly BNFL), Yorkshire Building Society (YBS / Hammonds Band), Faireys, Kennedys Swinton Concert Brass and others, and an impressive list of achievements with those bands includes wins at the British Open Championships, the National Championships and the European Championships. Steven has also been a recent member of the National Brass Band of New Zealand

As a baritone soloist Steven has appeared all over the world and has held National Baritone titles both sides of the ditch, Australian National Baritone Champion in 2008 and 2009 and a record breaking 13 times New Zealand National Baritone Champion.
